The Port Ludlow Coast Guard Auxiliary works quietly and sometimes doesn't get much press because we are an action group; over 3,700 hours were spent volunteering during just the first 3 quarters in 2005. The following are some statistics compiled by John Reseck for his column in the December 2005 Voice.

This year, to the end of October - the 52 individuals in Flotilla 41 have accomplished:

  • The training of nearly 500 students, from the second to seventh grades, in water safety -- 12 kids at a time -- one or two instructors to a group.
  • Over 136 Vessel Safety checks for our local boaters
  • Over 153 days on the water in boats doing patrols
  • Over 142 days on Marine Safety Patrols, many of them in the Port Ludlow Marina and at the Hood Canal Bridge as well as in Seattle on Elliot Bay.
  • Thirty-four separate class sessions in Public Education from "Basic Boating" to "Advanced Navigation" to "Using the GPS".
  • Thirty-one visits to marine dealers in our area with safe-boating information
  • Forty-nine class sessions to each USCGA members so they could do the above listed things
  • Helping to "fix up" the Port Townsend Coast Guard Station by doing carpentry, gardening, painting, and whatever else is needed.

Membership in the Coast Guard Auxiliary is open to any citizen of the United States and its territories and possessions, who is 17 years of age or older. Facility (radio station, boat or aircraft) ownership and special skills are desirable but not mandatory. Interested? — contact us
