Fees include class materials unless otherwise stated.

Class fees must be received seven days prior to the first class.

2007 Course Schedule

America's Boating Course (8 hour course)

Fee: $35 for materials, bring extra family member(s) (and share materials for $5/each) - meets from 1800-2200

Meets WA state Boater Education Requirements -

  • at Port Ludlow Fire Station on Monday and Wednesdays:
    • JANUARY 15 & 17, 2007 or
    • MARCH 12 & 14 or
    • MAY 14 & 16 or
    • JUNE 11 & 13, 2007


  • or at Chimacum Fire Station on Saturday and Sundays:
    • OCTOBER 13 & 14, 2007 or
    • NOVEMBER 10 & 11 or
    • DECEMBER 8 & 9 or

Let's Go Sailing (4 hour course)

A course for beginning sailors (Fee $40) - meets from 1800-2200

'How To' Boating (each course 3 hours except for the GPS course)

Fees vary from $20-$40 class to class depending on the materials involved
meets from 1900-2200

Each "How to Boating" session is a stand alone class. You can pick and choose the class(es) when convenient for you. Take one or take all - to learn something new or refresh your memory on a topic. The twelve sessions in the course may be taken individually or as a series for a USCG Auxiliary Certificate of Completion. Classes are taught by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliarists with extensive Puget Sound experience.

JANUARY 10, 2007 - "How to ... Read a Nautical Chart" (Fee $40) book
   Characteristics of nautical charts, particularly Mercator and polyconic projections, plotting positions in terms of latitude and longitude; various chart types/scales and their appropriate uses; basic knowledge of chart symbols, rapid and reliable measurement of direction, distance, and location on Mercator nautical charts. Emphasis on Puget Sound.

FEBRUARY 7, 2007 - "How to ... Use the Marine Magnetic Compass" (Fee $20)
   Parts and principles of operation of the marine magnetic compass; concepts of deviation and distinction between compass north, magnetic north, and true north, "swinging ship" and deviation table preparation; rapidly and reliably solving TVMDC and/or CDMVT computations.

MARCH 7, 2007 - "How to ... Do Dead Reckoning Navigation (Fee $20) "
   Working knowledge of dead reckoning methods including plotting, labeling, measuring and determining DR positions, speed, time, distance formulas and problem solving, speed estimation, tachometers and speed curves.

APRIL 11 & 18, 2007- "How to ... GPS for Mariners" (Fee $40) book
   What is the Global Positioning System? DGPS? WASS? Safely navigate a small craft to any destination using primarily a GPS and a conventional chart; waypoint entry and selection.

MAY 9, 2007- "How to ... Read the Weather" (Fee $20)
   Sources of weather information; wind and boating; wind and waves; understanding weather; weather and heat; fog; non-frontal weather

JUNE 6, 2007- "How to ... Use the VHF-FM Marine Radio (Fee $20) "
   Radios used on boats; functions of radios; licenses; selection your VHF-FM radio; operating your radio, maintain a radio watch; channels have special purposes, some "no-nos" radio procedures.

OCTOBER 10, 2007 - "How to ... Read a Nautical Chart" (Fee $40) book
